The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

To get started, you’ll need a set of jumper cables and another vehicle with a good battery. Once you’ve gathered your tools, follow these steps:

  1. Park both cars facing each other and turn them off.
  2. Locate the batteries in each vehicle.
  3. Locate the positive and negative terminals and make sure that they are clean.
  4. Connect the red clamp to the positive post on the dead battery.
  5. Uncoiling the battery cable, hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.
  6. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery.
  7. For the final clamp, connect it to an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame.
  8. Start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery first, and then, the one with the dead battery.
  9. Once the dead vehicle has been jump-started, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed on, and then, shut off the car that was used to help jump-start the dead car.
  10. Keep the engine running on the restarted vehicle for at least 10 minutes. Consult your owner’s manual for specific info on recommended times for your vehicle.

Jump-Start Car Battery Pro Tips

If your car won’t jump-start, you may need a battery replacement, or it may be a sign of a more serious problem. Take these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. If a clicking sound comes up when you are trying to start your car, it may be an issue with your starter. Schedule a service for a replacement immediately
  2. If the electrical systems of the car turn on, but the engine fails to turn over, there could be a number of issues. The ignition switch, battery, starter, or a fuse could be the cause. Service technicians have the expertise to diagnose the issue.
  3. After you have jump-started your vehicle, keep your car running, so that it has a chance to fully recharge.
